The project will connect to Scottish & Southern Energy Network’s (SSEN) distribution network and the approved design allows for deployment of more than 250MWh of battery storage. Bramley is part of a large pipeline of large-scale battery storage projects in the UK that BW Energy Storage Systems (“BW ESS”) (see Notes to Editors) committed to fund under the agreement that it announced with Penso Power in October 2021.
Penso Power and BW ESS will become joint shareholders in the Bramley development, with Penso Power overseeing the project’s deployment and managing it once it is operational. Richard Thwaites, Chief Executive of Penso Power said: “Bramley is an important project in our pipeline, and we expect it to play an important role in supporting UK energy security and ensuring the resilience of our electricity system. We are targeting 2024 for Bramley to enter commercial operation.” Erik Strømsø, CEO of BW ESS said: “I would like to congratulate the Penso team on achieving a successful outcome to this planning appeal. We are very pleased to be moving forward with the Bramley deployment, which marks the start of a significant investment programme for BW ESS in grid-scale batteries in the UK.”
