Projects

Working with strategic partners in Italy, Sweden and Australia, we’ve grown a multi-gigawatt pipeline, with over 1GWh of projects currently in construction.

United Kingdom

In the UK, BW ESS plans to build over 2GW of BESS.

Our portfolio is uniquely focused on large capacity (>100MW) and long duration sites (2-5hrs) in the Midlands and South of England. This strategy ensures we have sites that are close to load, offer economies of scale and remain future proof in a market that is moving away from grid support and towards wholesale energy arbitrage.

Nordics

In the Nordics, we have invested in and partnered with Ingrid Capacity, a leader and pioneer within the Nordic BESS space, with a pipeline exceeding 500MW in Sweden. BW ESS and Ingrid are also assessing potential opportunities in other Nordic countries.

Presently, 213MW of BESS projects are under construction (SE3/SE4 price zones), ranging in capacity between 5MW and 20MW. The batteries are generally of a one-hour duration, as they are targeting the grid support market, and expected COD is in 2H 2024.

Australia

In Australia, we have established Valent Energy an investment platform with over 1.6GW of utility-scale battery projects, including three in Victoria and New South Wales that are fully approved and ready-to-build. Valent is a partnership with Gaw Capital Partners, a private equity firm with US$ 33.7bn AUM and sizeable investments in real estate, renewables and digital infrastructure.

Italy

We partnered with ACL Energy on three development-stage projects totalling 395MW. ACL Energy is a Milan-based battery energy storage developer. ACL Energy and BW ESS are joint shareholders and are funding the development expenditure.

The 111MW project in Lombardia and the 97MW project in Puglia have been submitted to the Italian Ministry of Energy for approval. The 187MW project in Piemonte will be submitted for approval later this year. The projects are designed for 4-hour durations or longer to time-shift energy (e.g., MACSE scheme) and provide ancillary services to the grid.
