BW ESS and MIRAI Power partner to co-develop BESS in Southern Germany

Development partnership covers up to 1GW of large-scale energy storage projects

11th February 2025, ZURICH/MUNICH — Global energy storage owner-operator BW ESS and Munich-based energy storage developer MIRAI Power have signed a joint development agreement, setting out plans to co-develop up to 1GW of energy storage projects in Southern Germany.

Germany is rising to prominence as a growth hotspot for large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Europe, as the power market seeks to effectively integrate large volumes of renewable energy capacity, while managing negative pricing and curtailment risks. Germany is both Europe’s largest power market and its most liquid one. Around 7GWh of new storage is expected to be added by 2026 – a five-fold increase in capacity .

MIRAI Power is a pioneering BESS developer focused on the European market, led by a team with an extensive track record at leading renewable power development firms and utilities. Coupling this with BW ESS’ experience of rapidly scaling energy storage pipelines across a range of other global markets, as well as its proven supply chain and investment connections, the partners will jointly originate and develop opportunities in the South of the country.

Roberto Jiménez, Executive Director of BW ESS, said: “The MIRAI team share many of the same attributes as our own team – they are pragmatic, move fast and have shown considerable commercial acumen. Most importantly, they share our commitment to unlocking the value of energy storage. We’re excited to see the opportunities this partnership creates as we expand our presence in the German market.”

Marco Frascati, Managing Director of MIRAI Power, added: “Our mission is to contribute to a sustainable and reliable energy supply – through future-proof, innovative BESS projects strategically sited throughout Europe. Southern Germany is a region with huge energy storage development potential, and our partnership with a global leader like BW ESS will help us accelerate our efforts to decarbonize the energy system.”
